Saint Hilda’s Redcar, Cleveland is a new sustainable, community church and parish centre.

The design draws upon the important history of Saint Hilda in the north-east, the local tradition of boatbuilding and the modern characteristics of the town.

Its main spaces are a flexible nave/hall with cafe which also acts as a ‘shop window’ or ‘gallery’. It accommodates a very broad range of activities from solitary prayer to Zumba.

The design was developed through a series of consultation workshops with the parishioners and includes salvaged and restored dalle-de-verre glass from the demolished  church. There is also a 7 metre long enamelled glass clerestory designed by Chance de Silva incorporating the work of local artists.
