Tutti Frutti : ‘ReFab’, New Islington, Manchester
Client: Chance, Cooper, de Silva, Salvadori with Patricia Lozano Quintana
Radical house to be built as part of the Urban Splash ‘Tutti Frutti’ street in New Islington, Manchester, with Graham Cooper and Dani Salvadori.
The aim of the design was, as far as possible within legal and technical limitations, to make the house from pre-existing materials. In other words from re-used, salvaged or recycled materials.
The main materials proposed are: aluminium cladding recycled from drinks cans and other packaging; polycarbonate multi-layer translucent sheeting; beams (timber or steel) from demolished buildings; small-size timber off-cuts; salvaged industrial stairs; recycled flooring materials, paving and so on. As far as possible these would be sourced locally.
Called “Re-Fab”, it is a flexible family home which can provide 4/5 bedrooms and/or study spaces as well as a large double height family living/dining/kitchen. There is a split-level roof terrace, and two other balconies.
