With a ground storey of London stock bricks and lightweight cladding above, the building steps in response to the surrounding buildings. It mediates between a two-storey Victorian house and a 12-storey tower block, acting as a transitional building.

Internally, interconnected spaces with different half-levels create characterful and light-filled rooms with sunlight coming in from different angles and glimpsed views towards the surrounding open spaces.
The interiors combine exposed concrete elements with warm floors.

As part of the self-build and custom-build community at Graven Hill, Bicester, where participants purchase plots and work up designs for their individual new homes.

Carlos and Maite’s features double-height spaces in kitchen/dining and ground floor bedrooms and a master bedroom facing towards the tree-crowned woods of Graven Hill. It is clad in larch and aluminium with a hybrid steel/timber frame.

The new houses are timber-framed and clad with heat pumps and solar panels. One house, has a biodiversity meadow flower roof terrace with walk-on rooflights. In the future, the aim is to bring the whole site to net zero in energy use.

The new homes were carefully sited to avoid the root spread of numerous mature trees. All the houses face onto a shared green space.

Initial design and feasibility work to convert a listed barn into a music performance space for a classical music summer school.

Chance de Silva recommended a local architect with historic buildings experience (Jonathan Rhind) who took the project forward with planning consents, a developed design and site works.

Walmer Yard

Chance de Silva and Scanner devised a sound sculpture – Vex Bell – for a Royal Academy event at Walmer Yard, designed by Peter Salter. Called “Experiencing Architecture: Inviting Dialogue”, the event included talks, dance, music and architecture.

Venice Bienalle

Invited to make an art proposal for a derelict Palazzo, Palazzo Mora, as part of the Venice Architectural Bienalle, an installation was installed in a dilapidated staircase of the palazzo. The architecture and sound piece consisted of architectural formwork, for the future project Vex, with sound by Scanner which integrated the sounds of unseen occupants with samples from Erik Satie’s ‘Vexations.’

Royal Academy lecture/performance

Steve Chance and Robin Rimbeau (Scanner) played music, including Robin’s response to Alvin Lucier – sounds decaying in space – and talked about music and architecture.
